BADIN was founded in 2013 by the authors of the 2012 Toronto Declaration on Bridging Knowledge, Policy, and Practice in Aging and Disability (Toronto Declaration) with the support of March of Dimes Canada. The Toronto Declaration was a product of the Growing Older with Disabilities (GOWD) conference as part of the Festival of International Conferences on Caregiving, Disability, Aging and Technology (FICCDAT) held in Toronto, Canada June 5-8, 2011. FICCDAT was organized in part by March of Dimes Canada, a leading advocate issues of aging with disability and for bridging aging and disability in Canada. The 2011 FICCDAT meeting followed the success of the 2007 FICCDAT meeting in Toronto.
The Toronto Declaration, editorials related to it, and related GOWD meeting materials were published in December 2012 in a special issue of the International Journal for Integrated Care. The Toronoto Declaration builds upon the 2009 Barcelona Declaration on Bridging Knowledge in Long-term Care and Support and the Graz Declaration on Disability and Ageing.
